How Monocle Search Sorts Results
If you want to know what's going on under the hood, this information may be useful for you.
When searching for anything using Moncle Search, Monocle retrieves the results and sorts them in the best possible order, using the following criteria in order of decreasing priority:
- Words: Pages that contain more search terms are shown first. For example, if you search for "Interior design Santa Barbara", a match containing all those words will be shown before one that only contains "Barbara design".
- Typos: Pages that fit your search term with less typos will be shown first. For example, if you search for "plant", pages that contain "plait" will be shown higher in the results than pages that contain "plate".
- Proximity: Pages that contain your search terms as close together as possible, and ideally in the right order, will be shown first.
- Hierarchy: Pages that contain the search terms in higher hierarchy places – e.g. in a title – will show prior to pages that contain the search terms in lower hierarchy places, such as normal paragraphs.
- Chronological order: Newer pages will be shown before older pages.
- Exactness: Pages where the search terms are shown exactly will be shown before others. For example, if you search for "car", then a page containing "car" will be shown before one containing "cars".
At the moment, there is no way for you to influence the sorting order of Monocle Search results.
